Lumber

LUMBER DEFINED:
Softwood or Conifer (Cone or needle baring trees) sized to nominal standardized dimension usually for use in construction or finished application.

How is softwood lumber graded and sold?
Softwood lumber is sold in nominal sizing (See Nominal Sizing Chart). The grading of softwood lumber is based on the boards overall appearance and intended function.

GRADE DEFINITIONS:

#2 & Better:Tight knots allowed and minimum wane. Suitable for all types of construction.
#1 Structural Select:High Quality, relatively free of defects that may impair strength or stiffness. Used where high strength is desired and a relatively good appearance.
D & Better:Economical, Serviceable Grade for a natural or painted finish.
Premium:Very much like the D & Better Grade above, however usually one face is clear with no defect. This grade is use quite often for decking where one face will be turned down (not exposed).
West Coast #3 & Better:A west coast grade use for our incence cedar products only. This grade allows small tight knots but “no” wane.
Heart B:A grade designation for Redwood. This grade is all heart no “carmel” or (sapwood). This grade is described as mostly clear, vertical and mixed grained but allows what the Redwood Industry People call Large Defect. Large Defect can be a knot ranging from 2” to 6” in diameter. Usually only one large defect per board.
C & Better:This grade is usually mixed grain and all clear. No knots or wane allowed.
Clear Vertical:This is the highest designation for any softwood. We keep certain sizes of Redwood and Cedar in this grade. Sign maker who blast signs usually have to have a vertical grain wood, also people who hand work wood find vertical grained lumber easier to work.

Dricon also protects wood against termites and fungal decay. Dricon does not increase the corrosivity of metal hardware in contact with the wood. Redwood is a softwood with a light red color that turns to a dark red color with time. It is very weather resistant and is used in wet areas. Siding, paneling, decks and steam rooms are some of the uses for this wood. Soft to the to the touch with a fine grain pattern this wood is straight and strong.
