Decking

Capitol City Lumber Co. stocks four main styles of decking: Dry Treated (Copper Azole), Redwood, Incense Cedar and IPE. All species are available in standard decking size 5/4”x 6” with eased edges and are usually put over a 16” on center joist frame.

Species/Types Defined:

Dry Treated (CA)- For almost 20 years now Capitol City Lumber Co. has been a full stocking dealer of all Cox® Wood Preserving Products. The single biggest difference that distinguishes Cox® treated lumber from the competition is the fact that Cox® Re-Dries their treated lumber. All pressure treated CA (Copper Azole) lumber is treated by forcing the CA chemical into the wood. Water is the carrier used to penetrate the wood. Southern Yellow Pine lumber is placed in an airtight tank, and charged under extreme pressure forcing the chemical deep into the wood. After treatment the wood is full of moisture. Most treating company’s at this point send the treated lumber directly to the retailer to be sold to the end user. Cox® Re-dries their lumber after this treatment process by placing the lumber in a kiln dryer. The lumber is then dried down below 19% moisture content. Through this drying process the CA chemical fixates to the woods cell as the water evaporates out of the wood.

What benefits does this give the end user?

  1. Minimizes shrinkage problems in the wood. Dry treated has already gone though this process, under controlled methods at the treating facility.
  2. The lumber is more uniform in size.
  3. Better nail holding power because the wood is already dry.
  4. The lumber is safer because the bulk of the chemical leaching is controlled at the treating facility. Once the chemical is absorbed into the woods cell initially, it is locked in though the process of drying. There is little to no leach of the chemical after the lumber is dried back below 19% moisture content.
  5. The lumber is cleaner and lighter, due to lower moisture content.
  6. You can paint or stain the lumber at application because it is dry.
  7. Meets all local building codes, FHA, and grade stamp requirements.

Note: With the EPA’s recent ban on the use of CCA (Chromate Copper Arsenate) for use in residential application, Cox® Wood Preserving has chosen to use Arch Chemical's Copper Azole which is sold under the trade name Natural Select®. For more information on Copper Azole, visit www.coxwood.com

Redwood- Capitol City Lumber Co. is one of the only local lumberyards stocking Redwood. Back in the late 1960’s we started offering Redwood for backyard decks and patios. It was about this time that backyard decks and patios gained popularity. Nothing says Quality like a Redwood deck and we only carry All Heart Redwood in both construction grade and finished grade where a clear appearance is desired. All Heart Redwood does not allow sapwood in this grade designation. All Heart Redwood naturally resists rot and decay. There is no Guarantee against rot or decay; However, properly stained and finished Redwood can last for 30 years or more. Redwood, has natural beauty, holds stains and finishes well and due to its grain structure is more dimensionally stable. This key difference is important because the future aesthetics of your deck is highly dependent on how the wood ages and deals with strong external elements like the sun and heavy moisture. To learn more about Redwood, go to the California Redwood Associations website www.calredwood.org.

Incense Cedar- At Capitol City Lumber Co. we stock a west coast Incense Cedar in a #3 & Better Grade. Many people call Incense Cedar pencil stock cedar because one of its fundamental uses is in the manufacturing of pencils. Incense Cedar has excellent natural rot/decay resistance and is very dimensionally stable. Incense Cedar also accepts most stains and finishes very well. Incense Cedar’s appearance is a little more rustic looking. All Products are knotty and we offer a wide range of function in this grade from decking and finished boards to dimensional 2x and patterned sidings and paneling.

IPE- Capitol City Lumber Co. has recently started stocking IPE as a decking choice for our customers. IPE is a rich, dark brown exotic hardwood that is exported from Brazil. IPE is very dense (hard) and customers are attracted to its rich dark color, easy maintenance and all clear appearance. Just like Redwood IPE is slowly becoming the “Natural” choice in upper-scale homes where only the best is desired. At Capitol City Lumber Co. we pride ourselves in not only offering IPE decking boards, but also an array of 1x finished boards, dimensional 2x’s and even 4x4’s. We invite you to stop by and check out our complete IPE selection.
